New Car: 2009 Citroen C4

Citroen released pricing and specs for its redesigned European market C4 model slated to go head-to-head with the venerable small cars lineups from rivals Ford and Opel/Vauxhall. Key to its efforts in the economy car segment are two new gasoline engines co-developed with BMW that are said to be extremely fuel efficient and low-polluting.

Under the revised, more rounded hood lies a choice of five engines. For the gasoline variety, Citroen offers a 1.6L four-cylinder in either a 120 hp naturally-aspirated or 150 hp turbo application. The gasoline engines achieve a respectable 42.2 mpg and 40.9 mpg in combined European cycle. Three diesel powertrains include the all-new 2.0L HDi turbo, 1.6HDi (92 hp) and 1.6HDi (110 hp). Combined with a six-speed manual gearbox, the 2.0L unit gets 53.3 mpg on combined Euro cycle. On the exterior, designers incorporated clear crystal tail lamps out back to update the car's look, as well as new 16-in. and 17-in. alloy wheels. Two body colors, Borrasque and Recif Blue, have been added to the car's color palate. Below the curvier hood rests repositioned Chevron badging. Directional headlamps, front and rear parking assist, lane departure notification and integrated air freshener are available on the mid-cycle refresh

Within the cabin, drivers will first find the tachometer moved to the translucent central display. Plush leather grain has been employed on the dashboard and various door inserts to give the C4 a more upscale, contemporary feel. Prices for the 2009 Citroen C4 start at 12,695 pounds ($22,838) for the five-door hatchback and top out at 18,895 pounds ($33, 992) in coupe form.
